BEHIND THE NAME:
Chi Chia-Wei is a Taiwanese LGBTQ+ rights activist known for his tireless advocacy for marriage equality in Taiwan. Born in 1958, Chi publicly came out as gay in 1986, becoming one of the first individuals in Taiwan to do so. This bold step was taken during a time of significant political and social repression under martial law.
Chi’s activism spans decades and includes numerous legal battles and public demonstrations. His most notable achievement came as a result of his persistent legal challenges, which contributed to the landmark 2017 ruling by Taiwan's Constitutional Court. The court declared that banning same-sex marriage was unconstitutional, paving the way for Taiwan to become the first country in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage in 2019.
Despite facing ridicule, physical attacks, and imprisonment over the years, Chi remained undeterred in his mission. He is celebrated as a symbol of resilience and a pioneer in the LGBTQ+ rights movement, not just in Taiwan but across Asia.
