BEHIND THE NAME:
Harvey Milk (1930–1978) was an American politician and a pioneering LGBTQ+ rights activist who became one of the first openly gay elected officials in the United States. Born in Woodmere, New York, Milk served in the U.S. Navy before pursuing careers in teaching, finance, and theater. In 1972, he moved to San Francisco, where he became a prominent voice for the LGBTQ+ community and social justice.
Milk's political career gained momentum when he was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977. His victory was a groundbreaking moment, symbolizing increased visibility and representation for LGBTQ+ individuals in politics. During his time in office, Milk championed progressive causes, including affordable housing, workers' rights, and opposition to discriminatory laws targeting LGBTQ+ people.
Tragically, Milk's life was cut short when he was assassinated, along with San Francisco Mayor George Moscone, by a disgruntled former colleague in 1978. Despite his brief tenure in office, Milk's legacy endures as a trailblazer for LGBTQ+ rights and a symbol of courage and authenticity. His story continues to inspire activism worldwide, and his contributions were immortalized in the Academy Award-winning film Milk (2008).
